2 Many DJs – Yellow Magic Orchestra Mix

Japanese Electronic band Yellow Magic Orchestra are not only one of the best things to have happened to electronic music, they are one of the best things to have happened to music in general. It never hurts to remind people of their greatness….  (aware the tracks picked for display are ‘entry-level’ YMO)

“Sounds like Daft Punk” – Youtube.

It would take forever for me to write about how awesome I think they are and the vast amount of music they have created over decades as a group, as solo artists and producing for numerous others.

Thankfully, 2ManyDjs (Soulwax) have done an entire mix devoted to that. It was originally broadcast on Block.fm as part of the promotion for their recent shows in Japan. They said the following about the mix….

“All members of Yellow Magic Orchestra were involved in one way or another, either as producer, writer or performer. It shows how incredibly influential and prolific these guys have been and why they are still unequalled to this day, both as solo artists and together as YMO.”

It’s now being touted as promotion for the 12″ vinyl release of Soulwax’s “Transient Program for Drums and Machinery“. Little bit confused and to be honest… don’t care, I missed some of the original broadcast and am glad to have an opportunity to hear it in it’s entirety.

Bonus – (Shoe-horning this in a little…)
Taeko Ohnuki‘s “Carnaval” is featured in the mix and we get all of about 30 seconds of it (and even that has been edited). It’s taken from her incredible album, “Romantique” which was produced by Yellow Magic Orchestra.  It’s worth hearing the whole thing…

And then checking out some of her other albums. “Mignonne” is a good place to start, it’s not electronic, more… ‘City Pop’ (also has production work from Yellow Magic Orchestra, showcasing their & her versatility). Hopefully the likes “Iidasenakute” (I Won’t Dare) and “4:00 am” will demonstrate rather well what a cracking vocalist she is and you don’t need to know Japanese to appreciate that.
